Vote Now and Vote Often to Bring the Fruit Trees to Warwick
Warwick, NY, April 14, 2011 -- Warwick will have a rare and wonderful opportunity this summer. The Fruit Tree Planting Foundation of California has accepted Warwick’s application to win one of 20 community fruit tree orchards they will be awarding this year as part of their second “Communities Take Root” competition.
The proposed site for the orchard will be the Warwick Valley Community Center, where the 48 locally-sourced trees – pears, Asian pears, peaches, plums, nectarines, and pawpaws - will be planted. Not only will the trees serve to enhance the Community Center site (where they will complement perfectly the community vegetable garden already there), they will also be incorporated into the Center’s programming for the many Town and Village residents who visit for various activities.
The program however, is a competition based on voting and community spirit and that’s where community support is desperately needed to make this a reality. Starting on April 15th, the Communities Take Root website (http://www.communitiestakeroot.com) will display all the community applications, each having a photo and a short explanation of the proposed orchard project. And then … the voting begins.
Any community member is entitled to vote and to vote more than once! In fact, people are allowed to vote once a day for as many days as they choose. In addition to community voting, there are also official judges who vote and, based on total votes recorded, 5 orchards are awarded at the end of May, June, July, and August.
Should Warwick be declared one of the 20 winning communities, the actual planting would take place sometime in September or October, 2011.
So if the entire community shows its spirit by voting early and often – the same spirit that helped bring the International Communities in Bloom award to Warwick last year – we will have a beautiful new fruit tree orchard in the heart of our community.
